My name is Nilgen E. Velazco González
Age:30

Welcome to my recording...
I want to talk to you from my point of view and the contributions I want to strive for in this new year...
My hope is that I see the world as it is and the consequences of my actions, help rather than harm.
I believe it's no longer acceptable to be inactive; I want to live this life, and contribute to our future. This journey starts by making decisions because I don’t like how the future is looking for my family or our community, in fact I’m angry. I don’t think that’s a bad incentive, people and governments have done worse. An example I can share of a decision made in anger with beneficial consequences is my journey of learning English as my second language. I got angry and frustrated with my best friend speaking English with her mainland American family. I wanted to understand; my next step was to start asking more questions, reading and watching tv shows in English, and learning lots of verbs. By the year I could understand but not speak it; I kept learning because I wasn’t content with living on the side lines. Even now I take time to study the language; like many things in life, you have to keep walking the path of learning.
Once again, I'm angry! I have been working hard as a homemaker and teacher to my toddler, and now to a newborn, just not working on my IT background; which I love .This is changing, I’m back to studying cyber security, computer science, and data analysis. I see this as invaluable skills for the community. For example, there are more patients having heart attacks because of inadequate Cyber security; not having access to patients medical history instantly because of attacks like ransomware- blocked from your data- or because they are asking for too much identification information; making it harder and more time consuming for nurses and doctors to access the data.
My present and those of my community are filled with insecurities for our families; our health and day to day well-being. (For future reference, we’re in the middle of a global pandemic by the virus COVID-19.) Of course, I have a responsibility to fulfill, and so decided to specialize in the tools that are going to be used for that well-being that we ALL deserve.
I have decided I’ll use my time, intellect and my hands to do my part in giving us a chance to have a future. My next step is researching, analyzing data and sharing this information . If you actually read scientific reports by competent scientists; you can learn a lot about the world we live in. (See https://intelligence.weforum.org/) I researched domestic, international, governmental, and private data on the future of careers, this led me to some conclusions.
We all have two huge problems that all stem from one if you analyze it. Climate Change will end our futures and COVID-19 is dismantling our present. As a citizen of the United States and also the colony of Puerto Rico; history tells me not to completely trust our government. I had no trust for the past administration and the present government officials don’t plan to take a huge stride in favor of the people and against these huge problems. I do remain hopeful our leaders will act in favor of our WHOLE community.
At present we’re at the beginning of a recession; to change the tides in your favor and the ones in your community, we’re going to utilize the tools of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Careers are going to be guided by new technologies, businesses, and our climate. Everyone of a working-age needs to adapt, there’s no choice in this. The path to take here is creating a SKILL base, skills that can’t be taken by automation or AI-artificial intelligence. Also ones that use your natural talents and make you an asset.
The first objective for everyone is to survive COVID-19 as a species, meaning all hands on deck for health-related professions. Utilizing the tools that biology, chemistry, human care, and many more areas have. We’re already starting to see the effects on health workers with heavy workloads. Sadly, I don't have a passion for these studies, I know I wouldn't give my all, as it’s not my path. Nevertheless, I truly appreciate their existence and also the wisdom they possess and time they share with us.
The next industry in line is to be a major participant in our future careers in Information Technologies ; in specific AI, data specialization, Network security analyst and Cloud. I have barely scratched the surface of this path and my objective is to master it. This is no small thing, just the AI field is composed of other areas like Software development, Statistics, Data Analysis, Machine Learning, etc. Not only are these skills difficult to master, but they also take Time and dedication from anyone trying to get close to mastery. If this is your path as well, I welcome you and hope we can learn together.
Last but not least is our third industry, the Green jobs revolution. The careers we actually need, to live our best lives on this planet, and possibly others. Our earth is understood by multiple physical sciences like physics, geology, biology, mathematics, hydrology, and many more, but to actually save the earth we’ll need managers. Great managers and policymakers, with the power to make real and lasting change.
Our politicians are tied to too many industries and to an uneducated population that is no longer prepared to make decisions that would ONLY affect the next generation. We’ll still need other industries like entertainment, food and tourism to move us forward, they will also change in the near future. Careers will be created and destroyed in the next 10 years but one true thing is that we have to prepare NOW and have the grit necessary to do extraordinary things for the next generation and our planet. Thank You for listening.
